I Ran
I ran and saw: Two cats who sat beneath an open window while the first sunlight of the day slipped away past the horizon. Their ears perked when my feet hit the pavement and passed them by, I caught a glimpse as a brown, patchy face jumped up toward the window and paws landed on the window sill, watching with big eyes. One lap down. Under a young oak tree a mockingbird sang and threw an acorn down at me. It landed in my hair. I ran on. A large man with a red face stepped out of his apartment. He had a bright smile and laughter around him. A mess of color followed him out. White. Black. Red. Brown. And a black round ball came barking out the door. "Coming through!" I declared and started to pass him by. Five dogs surrounded me with tail wags and nuzzles. All at once I realized how beautiful life could be. I ran past the traffic of people, tired from the day, coming home. I hoped it would be a warm welcome.
